On June 20, 2023, the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, hosted an International Scientific and Practical Conference and Roundtable on “Ecotechnological Consequences of the Destruction of Hydraulic Structures. Forecasts and prospects for restoration”.

At the conference, scientists from the Institute of Telecommunications and Global Information Space, Oleksandr Trofymchuk and Iurii Kaliukh, presented a report on “Technical condition of the building structures of the Kakhovka HPP before the explosion and the probable place of explosives placement”.

In particular, the report states that the probable place of explosive placement is the dam’s abutment, where the following defects and damage were recorded during a visual inspection of the hydraulic structures of the Kakhovka HPP:

  • wetting of the walls;
  • water filtration through the seams of the abutment;
  • concrete pitting and corrosion;
  • cracks;
  • exposure and corrosion of reinforcement.
