On 20 August 2026, the Kyiv City State Administration held a working-group meeting on restoring and maintaining the hydrological condition of Blue Lake in Kyiv’s Podilskyi District.
The meeting was attended by Vasyl Trysniuk, Head of the Environmental Research Department at the Institute of Telecommunications and Global Information Space of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor. He was included in the working group at the Institute’s recommendation.
Participants reviewed the results of lake-restoration measures carried out by the municipal enterprise Pleso, water-level monitoring data, and survey findings. They also discussed outstanding issues, the need for additional scientific research, and the next steps.
In his presentation, Vasyl Trysniuk outlined the Institute’s scientific proposals for integrated monitoring and forecasting of Blue Lake’s hydroecological condition. He emphasized that the lake should be regarded as a pilot site for introducing a modern monitoring system for urban aquatic ecosystems, using in-situ observations, Earth remote sensing, geoinformation technologies, spatiotemporal analysis, and mathematical modelling.
One of the key proposed areas of cooperation is the creation of a digital GIS model of Blue Lake and its catchment area. It would integrate data from Pleso, field-research results, cartographic materials, and satellite observations. Such a system could serve as a digital passport for the lake and as a basis for forecasting its condition under varying natural and human-induced factors.
In the future, the approach tested at Blue Lake could be extended to other water bodies in the capital and used to establish a unified geoinformation system for monitoring and forecasting the condition of Kyiv’s water bodies.
Following the meeting, the Institute’s representative proposed designating Blue Lake as a pilot site for scientific and technical cooperation between Pleso and the Institute of Telecommunications and Global Information Space of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as developing a specific joint research plan.
The Institute is ready for further practical cooperation with the Kyiv City State Administration and Pleso in providing scientific support for the preservation and restoration of the capital’s aquatic ecosystems.
